Journey to the Centre of the Earth Characters of the story 1- Professor Lidenbrock: A famous scientist and geologist . He gave lectures at the University of Hamburg . Other geologists came from all over the world to learn from him . 2- Axel : A young boy who came to live with his uncle when his parents died . He was proud to be the assistant of his uncle . 3- Martha : A professor's cook . 4- Hans : A guide from Iceland . 5- Dr Fridrikson : A scientist from Iceland . 6- Reykjavik : The capital of Iceland . 7- Sneffels An extinct volcano in Iceland . It hasn't erupted since 1229 . Chapter 1 1- Where did the Prof and Axel live ? They lived in a house in the city of Hamburg . 2- Why was Martha worried ? Because the Prof came home early and his dinner wasn't ready yet . 3- Why was the book fantastic ? It was more than six hundred years old 4- What were runes ? Runes were the letters of the old Icelandic alphabet. 5- What kind of book was it ? It was a translation of a famous Icelandic book . It was written in the 12th century by Snorri Sturlasson 6- Why was Axel proud to be the assistant of his uncle ? Because his uncle was a famous scientist and geologist 7- Where did Prof Lidenbrock work ? At the university of Hamburg . 8- Why did the Prof guess that the message was written in Latin ? Because the scientists of the 16th century always wrote about their discoveries in Latin . 9- Why couldn't the Prof understand the parchment ? Because the letters were mixed up and the parchment was written in a secret code 10- Why was the Prof excited ? Because he couldn't understand the parchment . 11- Why did Axel come to live with his uncle ? Because his parents died . 12-Why did the Prof use a magnifying glass ?
